Four Ways Young Sheldon Changed TBBT

Sheldon Lee Cooper might be an obnoxious oddball, but hey, Young Sheldon adds some zinger to the character!

CBS’ Young Sheldon continues to enjoy colossal success and fans are rooting for the roll-up of the next three seasons that would keep the show going till at least 2024. A prequel to The Big Bang Theory (TBBT), Young Sheldon has done a commendable job in changing our perception about the square peg in a round hole that adult Sheldon is. Here is why.

Sheldon Shared a Troubled Relation with his Father

In TBBT, we have heard a lot about Sheldon’s mother Mary and his sisters but hardly about his father except the vague mutterings about the striking differences Sheldon had with him. The alcoholic, high-school gym teacher, who irrespective of sharing a few tender moments with Sheldon, mostly remained aloof from the family.

In Young Sheldon, we see more of these moments of affection and emotional intimacy that a grown-up Sheldon has blocked from his memory on purpose and for self-preservation.

Why Sheldon Cared and Comforted Penny?

Sheldon and Penny were often at loggerheads with each other. They were two radically different individuals living across the halls with equally different perspectives completely alien to each other. Yet, how do they manage to become the best of friends?

Young Sheldon sheds light on this aspect by portraying the sibling dynamics between Sheldon and his twin sister Missy who would definitely remind you of Penny.

Sheldon was not always a Cynical, Controlling Brat

Sheldon as a roommate, friend and lover could be downright annoying. Nonetheless, a young Sheldon was never a brat; in fact, a far cry from it. He is naïve, innocent and helpful and offers an honest glimpse into the Sheldon Cooper we were later acquainted with in TBBT.

Sheldon Cooper had a Few Role Models

We may have pondered aloud why Sheldon is such an eccentric, headstrong verging on self-righteousness and intellectual snobbery with expertise on subjects myriad and lesser-talked about.

The gamut of idols Young Sheldon has is stunning and awe-inspiring. Dr. Sturgis, Paige, Professor Proton and Pastor Jeff certainly had a far-reaching impact on Sheldon’s person. They help us dissect and navigate through the layered complexities embedded in his character.

Young Sheldon is an origin story beyond doubt. We find out about the quirks and twists of the character—its unpredictability and irrationality at times, but the show is also an astoundingly beautiful revelation for Sheldon fans. It allows you to take a journey to discover Sheldon, anew.
