From Mughal-E-Azam to Bahubali 2, the Biggest Blockbusters of Indian Cinema (Part 1)

India produces more movies than any other movie industry in the world. From the time the first Indian movie was released till today, thousands are movies have been released in India and some of them were huge blockbusters. Here is the list of some of the biggest blockbusters of Indian cinema ever.

Mughal-E-Azam (1960)

Mughal-E-Azam is considered a classic today. It was directed by K.Asif and starred Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, and Madhubala in lead roles. Set during the Mughal era, this movie is about the fictional love story between Prince Salim and Anarkali a court dancer.

 Asif directed Mughal-E-Azam is a milestone in Indian cinema and it was the biggest hit till then when it was released in the year 1960. It was also the most expensive movie ever made in India that cost around 1 crore and took more than a decade to complete. It was the dream project of its director K.Asif and it followed the story of love between Prince Salim and Anarkali which was opposed by Emperor Akbar. It held the record of highest-grossing Indian movie for fifteen years.

Sholay (1975)

Sholay probably is the most iconic Bollywood movie ever and each character in the movie became iconic no matter how small the role was. It had an ensemble cast of Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, HemaMalini, Jaya Bachchan, and Amjad Khan. 

Sholay broke the record of Mughal-E-Azam to be the highest-grossing Indian movie ever. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, Sholay was an action drama inspired by the western movies of Hollywood made famous by the likes of Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood. The story of the movie was inspired by the Japanese movie The Seven Samurai and the Hollywood movie, the magnificent seven. It tells the story of Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) who hires two small-time crooks Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) and Veeru (Dharmendra)) to catch the notorious dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan)

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)

Hum Aapke Hai Kaun directed by SurajBarjatya and starring Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit is still the biggest hit in Indian cinema inflation-adjusted. 

SurajBarjatya’s family drama Hum Aapke Hai Kaun is the biggest hit in Indian cinema with an adjusted net gross of more than 700 crores. It featured Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in lead roles and it was a remake of Rajshri’s one of the earlier movies NadiyakePaar. It didn’t get a bumper opening but with positive word of mouth, the momentum picked up and it’s not only became the biggest hit of that year but also the biggest hit of Indian cinema ever.

Dangal (2016)

Dangal starring Aamir Khan released in 2016 earned more than 2000 crores worldwide, a major chunk of which came from China where it was one of the biggest hits ever. It earned more than 300 crores in India.

Aamir Khan starrerDangal was a sports film based on the Phogat sisters made a whopping Rs 2000 Crore worldwide and tops the list of highest-grossing Indian movies of all time (worldwide). It was the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2017 for Walt Disney Studios which distributed it after Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

Bahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017)

Bahubali 2: The conclusion warned more than 500 crores in India alone making it the highest-earning movie in India ever. It was the sequel of the blockbuster movie Bahubali: The Beginning.

SS Rajamauli directed Bahubali 2: The Conclusion was the sequel to Bahubali: The Beginning and it featured Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, and Rana Duggabati in main roles. It was a period epic fantasy movie that stormed the box office when released earning more than 500 crores only from India. It earned 1,810 crores worldwide making it the biggest grosser only behind Dangal when it comes to worldwide collections.
