Hera Pheri to Drishyam: Malayalam Movies Which Were Remade in Bollywood (Part I)

Malayalam movies are the perfect fusion of commercial elements and art.

The Malayalam film industry is one of the best but quite underrated. Unlike their other counterparts Telugu, Tamil, and Kannada movies, Malayalam movies are not over the top but they are not art movies either. Bollywood has remade many Malayalam movies and here we have created a list of a few Malayalam movies which were remade in Bollywood.

Bhool Bhulaiya from Manichitrathazhu

Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, and Shiney Ahuja Bhool Bhulaiya was a remake of the 1993 Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu which featured Mohanlal and Shobana.

Bhool Bhulaiya which was released in 2007 was a psychological horror film directed by Priyadarshan. The movie was a big hit with great performances by Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan and it’s considered a cult movie today. But those who have seen the original Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu feel that the Malayalam movie was far better than its Hindi remake. Manichitrathazhu was remade in Tamil as Chandramukhi and featured superstar Rajnikanth in the lead and it was also a big hit.

Hera Pheri from Ramji Rao Speaking

The 2000 movie Hera Pheri starring Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, and Paresh Rawal was a remake of the Malayalam movie Ramji Rao Speaking.

Hera Pheri is considered one of the best comedy movies ever made in Bollywood. Directed by Priyadarshan, Hera Pheri featured Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, and Tabu as main leads. It gave a new lease of life to Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty who were going through rough patches in their career. But very few are aware that it was a remake of a superhit Malayalam movie Ramji Rao Speaking which was released in 1989 and directed by the duo Siddique–Lal (in their directorial debut) and it featured Sai Kumar, Mukesh, Innocent, Rekha, Vijayaraghavan and Devan in the main roles with Sankaradi, Sukumari, Kunchan and Mamukkoya were in supporting roles.

Billu from Katha Parayumbol

The Irfan Khan, Sharukh Khan, and Lara Dutta starrer movie Billu was a remake of the 200y Malayalam movie Katha Parayumbol.

The story of Katha Parayumbal was inspired by the classic tale of friendship between Shri Krishna and Sudama. The original movie starred Sreenivasan as Balan, a poor barber who was a childhood friend of now superstar Ashokraj played brilliantly by Mammooty. The Hindi remake Billu was directed by Priyadarshan and Irfan played the role of the Barber while Shahrukh Khan played the role of a Bollywood superstar. Along with Hindi, it was remade in Telugu and Tamil also.
