Hera Pheri to Drishyam: Malayalam Movies Which Were Remade in Bollywood

Bollywood has always remade movies of other film industries and in earlier days Bollywood copied without taking permission from the makers of the original but now with strict copyright laws, one has to formally buy the rights to the original movie.

Drishyam from Drishyam 

The Hindi movie Drishyam starring Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Tabu and Rajat Kappor is the remake of Mohanlal starrer Malayalam movie of the same name. 

Drishyam is a 2013 movie starring Mohanlal is a crime suspense drama movie starring Mohanlal and one of the biggest hit movies of the year when it was released. Later it was remade in many languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. The Hindi version was directed by Nishikant Kamath and featured Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, and Rajat Kapoor in pivotal roles. It was a box office success along with being critically acclaimed. Its sequel Drishyam 2 is releasing in November 2022 which is also a remake of the Malayalam movie of the same name which was released in 2021.

Bodyguard from Bodyguard

The Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor starrer 2011 movie Bodyguard was a Hindi remake of the Malayalam movie of the same name, 

The 2011 movie Bodyguard starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead roles was the biggest hit of that year and earned more than 150 crores at the box office. It was an official remake of the Malayalam movie of the same name. Siddique who directed the original Malayalam movie directed the Hindi remake also. Apart from Hindi, Bodyguard was also remade in Tamil also.

Boss from Pokkiri Raja

Boss featured Akshay Kumar in the lead with Danny Denzongpa, Aditi Rao Hydari, Shiv Pandit, and Mithun Chakraborty in supporting roles while Ronit Roy played the main antagonist.

Boss is a 2013 action drama movie that had Akshay Kumar in the lead. The movie was directed by Anthony D’ Souza. It was a remake of the 2010 Malayalam movie Pokkiri Raja. It was directed by debutante Vysakh and featured Mammootty and Prithviraj Sukumaran as the main leads. It was a masala entertainment movie and did underwhelming business at the box office. The Hindi remake was also not a big hit and managed to do just average business at the box office.
