Here are simple steps to reduce food waste
Learn to shop smart, store and consume the leftovers
Looking after and conserving the environment has become of utmost importance to the present generation. While using no plastic and saving water are some of the basics that one has adapted to in the current times, a lot of attention also needs to be paid to the waste one generates at home. Waste management, segregation, and reduction are steps at the base level of building a healthy and living conducive environment. With the million tons of waste generated every day leading to the burning causing air pollution and a lot of plastic landing up in the open fields and ocean, we need to assess what one is doing at the grass-root level. Here are some steps to begin reducing food waste.
Begin by buying a stock that is required, do smart shopping
After entering a supermarket or a vegetable shop, it is difficult to help stop oneself from not filling the cart with food products that we know we might not use and, in fact, do even need. Well, buying food and another kitchen material in bulk for any emergency is a wise decision, but oftentimes most of that food ends up in the dustbin. Important is one does thoughtful buying, which includes visiting market after few days rather than bulking. Also, you can try to make a list of all the absolutely necessary items when stock shopping.
Learn to store the food items the correct way
Buying groceries is one thing, and storing them is another task. When buying bulk and storing inefficiently often leads to a lot of food being wasted before even it reaching the cooking stage. When storing fruits and vegetables, make sure items like potato, onion, garlic, and banana, to name a few, should never be refrigerated. Certain items, veggies and fruits ripen early, so it is wise to use them in time before being thrown away.
A clean fridge is better than over-stocked
At the tendency of over buying our fridge looks like a supermarket stock table. When the fridge is overstuffed, things tend to get hidden, and by the time eyes catch a glimpse of them, it is too late. This is one of the biggest causes of food waste. So keep the fridge organised for you to be able to see the foods clearly. Place the old food upfront and stock the new one behind.
Leftovers are food, too, don't throw them away.
Suppose you are done with the food on your plate and still have something left which you can't finish. Do not throw that food but store it and eat the next day. Or maybe later when you feel hungry.
