Here is why the Tibetan apples are called the black diamonds
Just the difference in colour and much more sweeter than the red ones
It is a famous saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and thanks to this saying the popularity of an apple grew manifold. And while you are chewing on a red juicy crunchy apple, this is not the only variety that will help you keep the doctor away. Among the variety of blood red and green apples, there is a unique variety of apples that are black in colour. Yes, you heard that right. An apple that is black in colour. It is a rare breed of apples that are grown specifically in the mountainous terrains of Tibet.
Black Diamond’s history and making This rare unique dark purple skin coloured apple belongs to the family of HuaNiu apples, also known as Chinese Red Delicious, cultivated in the region of Nyingchi, around 3,100 meters above sea level. Nyingchi days witness warm temperatures and abundant sunlight that enables seed growth. While at night the region can reach a temperature below freezing level, which leaves the apples to adapt to this weather to survive. Hence, it is due to the region's high altitude and drastic changing temperature.
Since the temperature in the region fluctuates wildly throughout day and night, with the apples being exposed to a high amount of ultraviolet light causes the skin to go from the characteristic deep red to dark purple.
The characteristics of Black Diamond apple Black, rather purple from the outside, the white pulp on the inside is as juicy and crunchy as any other apple. They are gleaming, from the outside the apples almost look like thick natural candle wax outer skin but have an immensely nice texture when you bite into them.
According to the fans of this variety of apple, it is also known as the ‘scorpion fruit’. It is said to be sweeter and crisper than the standard varietal of apples available in the market. The sweetness of the apple is also attributed to the fact that these contain higher levels of natural glucose. And it is also the huge amount of organic sugars that makes the black apple naturally sweet, with the thick skin giving it a unique richness.
Its cultivation Since it is grown in harsh weather and requires particular weather conditions to grow it is only found in the high terrains of Tibet making it a rare breed that is highly in-demand. Hence many farmers are reluctant to grow this apple since its growing process can take up to eight years. In fact, they even have to pass a strict quality control test, and only about 30% of them are worthy of sale.
