High time we face the truth: Learn how you can overcome denial

Do not keep everything bottled up-tell the truth, instead express yourself to others.

Denial can be overcome, however, it is not that simple. Even though you can experience some feelings of guilt and humiliation, having the courage to face the truth and reach out for support will help. Refusing information concerning addictive behaviours, dismissing the results and downplaying family and friends’ health concerns are all examples of reality denial. Here are a few ways through which you can overcome denial and speak your heart out.

Publish a “truth about substance use” journal

The first step in overcoming denial is self-awareness, and you might not be aware of how much or how frequently you use drugs or alcohol. You want to face the truth with the aid of this journal. The entries do not have to be elaborate or lengthy and simply record the times, dates and quantities and substances you ingest. You may conclude that you do consume too many addictive substances if you consider how frequently you use drugs or drink alcohol.

Examine our reasons for rejecting reality

There is a purpose for denial and it can be triggered by a variety of emotions, including fear, rejection, guilt, humiliation and disappointment. You can discuss these feelings with your friends and family as well. Tell them that accepting the reality terrifies, bothers or scares you. Face your feelings head-on and accept your rage

It’s natural to feel angry or disappointed when dealing with denial; those emotions are normal and negative feelings do not instantly vanish just because you accept denial. This does not imply, that you should let your emotions rule your actions. Face your feelings and then you can find a quiet place and let everything out. Release all your pent-up rage by screaming, sobbing or even yelling, this does not entail pounding walls and yelling at everyone who comes your way and, in the end, they are not to blame for your situation.

If we don’t let go of our denial, we might even use it against ourselves. Life happens, you must acknowledge your denial and embrace reality for what it is.
