Highest 1st innings lead by England vs India

England taking a massive first innings lead, particularly when India bat first in swinging and seaming conditions, is not a rare occurrence. 486 Edgbaston 2011 (Eng won) In the third test match of the India tour of England in 2011, the home side won the toss and put India into bat. India were bowled out for or just 224 in the first innings with only one batsman MS Dhoni making a half-century.

Dhoni made 77 off 96 deliveries at a strike rate of over 80. There were contributors from Gautam Gambhir who made 38, Rahul Dravid with 22, VVS Laxman with 30 and Praveen Kumar with 26.

Stuart Broad and Tim Bresnan picked up four wickets each for England. In reply, the home side piled on the runs and the misery on team India as they made over 700, finally declaring with a lead of 486.

As expected, India were bowled out for 244 in their second innings due to James Anderson's four wicket haul and lost the match by an innings and 242 runs.

380 Chennai 1984/85 (Eng won) Surprisingly, England's next biggest lead in the first innings in test cricket came against India in their own backyard at Chennai, but that was way back in 1984/85 when the Indian pitches were always not conducive to spin bowling. England went on to win that match as well.

386 Leeds 1967 (Eng won) When England took a first innings lead of 386 on the India tour of England in 1967, an England victory was a foregone conclusion.

368 Old Trafford 1936 (Draw) Despite conceding a first innings lead of 368, India did a great job of ending the match in a draw as they kept England of in the 1936 test match at Old Trafford.

354 Leeds 2021 (Eng won) When India were bowled out for just 78 runs in the first innings of the Leeds test match in 2021 after being put into bat, there was little that the bowlers could have done to pull things back in the favour of the visitors. Only two of the batsmen managed to reach double figures in the first innings, with the batters recording as many as three ducks.

England piled up 432 runs in the first dig and India were bowled for 278 in their second essay, thus losing the match by an innings and 76 runs.
