Openers Mark Taylor and Michael Slater added 128 runs for the first wicket. Slater was the first to depart on 58 off 131 deliveries with seven boundaries. Mark Taylor went on to make 124 off 233 walls with 12 boundaries.

As a result, Australia posted 389 runs from 112.3 overs despite a 6 wicket haul from Peter Such. England were bowled out for 210 in their first innings with only Graham Gooch successful in making a half-century. Merv Hughes and Shane Warne picked up four wickets each for Australia.

The visitors batted superbly in their second innings on the back of half centuries from David Boon, Mark Waugh and Steve Waugh and an unbeaten century from Ian Healy as they declared for 432/5.

England were bowled out for 332 in their final innings despite a brilliant century from Graham Gooch and went on to lose the match by 179 runs. In essence, it was the brilliant opening partnership between Taylor and Slater which laid the foundation for a famous Ashes victory for Australia.
