Home-made probiotic drinks that can keep your gut healthy

It is extremely important to maintain great digestive health by consuming probiotic drinks to reduce the body's susceptibility to diseases.

Probiotics promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria and are linked to an overall wide range of health. They also improve mental health conditions by improving mood. Taking probiotic supplements results in decreased levels of c-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation) and hormones.

Water Kefir

The vegan, dairy-free drink is prepared water and kefir grains which are left to ferment over a couple of days and help build immunity.  Dissolve one-fourth cup of sugar in half cup of water and use three measures of it in a glass container with kefir grains. Let it sit undisturbed for three days in a warm place. Strain the sugar and consume it with mint leaves and lemon juice.

Kanji

The humble kanji is a humble and wholesome drink made in a number of ways and is considered excellent for digestive processes, building gut health and immunity. Peel carrots and add them to boiling water. After the water comes to boil again, shut off the heat and leave it to cool. Add salt, mustard powder and transfer to a container and let it sit for 3 days. Do not keep it in the sun after it is ready.

Kombucha

The ‘super drink’ took the health industry by storm because it is delicious, satiating and great for health. It also helps in building immunity. To make kombucha at home you will need a scoby. It is a starter for fermentation. Put the scoby and cooled tea in a gallon jar. Cover with muslin cloth and expose t to sunlight for at least a week. After a week if it is tasty zingy with scoby floating on top, your kombucha is ready.

Chaach

Buttermilk is one of the most commonly available probiotic drinks in Indian homes. It has several cooling and digestive properties and is best eaten in summers or after a meal. It is often spiced with black pepper or crushed cumin seeds.

Apple Cider Vinegar tea

This drink aids in weight loss, helps digestion and strengthens the immune system. Boil water with cinnamon stick and ginger and strain it in a mug. Add 1.5 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, honey, ginger julienne. Have it in the morning. You can add apple slices and have them throughout the day.
