How Brian Lara smacked 400*, the highest score in tests
Multiple players have reached 300 in test cricket after Brian Lara's 400* against England in 2004, but no one has been able to top it.
West Indies' batting great Brian Lara broke Sir Garfield Sobers' world record of test cricket's highest individual score by blasting 375 against England in 1994. Lara dominated the England attack for close to 13 hours and struck 45 fours while facing almost 90 overs.
The record stood for nearly a decade, after which Australian opener Matthew Hayden topped it with 380 against Zimbabwe in Perth. But Lara came back hard to regain the lead. Just six months later, Lara smashed 400 not out which remains the highest individual score in test cricket.
This time as well, the knock came against England at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St John's in 2004 in a series that was going very well for the visitors thus far.
West Indies were nowhere near their best and had lost the first three test matches prior to this game. They were looking destined for a whitewash, but Brian Charles Lara had other plans.
To be honest, Lara was no longer the force he was when he had cracked 375 a decade ago. His captaincy was on the line, and he had little support from his teammates.
Host West Indies won the toss and batted first on an utter featherbed in Antigua. At 98-2, their openers Chris Gayle and Darren Ganga were back in the hut, but with the shine off the new ball, the stage was set for the batting legend.
The next time a wicket fell, the score had raced to 330-3, thanks to one man, Brian Charles Lara. Lara added over 200 runs for the third wicket with Sarwan, wearing down the likes of Andrew Flintoff, Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison.
The West Indian captain batted for a full two days as the home team finally declared at 751/5 on day 3. England were unable to dismiss Lara as he walked back to the pavilion on 400 not out.
As West Indies used up most of the match's time, the test, which was the last match of the series, was drawn. England won the series 3-0, their first in 36 years in the Caribbean, and captain Lara received some criticism for declaring a bit too late, but then 400 is not scored everyday in test cricket.
