Staring at a computer screen for hours is harmful to your eyes.

In the long run, it can lead to some serious eye trouble, taking a huge toll on your sight.

Over the years, computers have become an inseparable part of our life. Owing to the pandemic, we now spend most of our time in front of a computer screen(be it for work, studying, or entertainment purposes). Now, as anything excessive is bad, this too is detrimental for our health in various ways. More precisely, it can damage our eyesight and lead to several critical issues such as eyestrain, dry eyes, itchiness, blurry vision, and more.

So, if your job involves prolonged computer use, do adopt the following habits to take care of your eyes.

Use proper lighting

Be it indoor or outdoor, excessively bright light can cause severe eye strain in a very quick period. So, use blinds or shades to eliminate exterior light, and also use lower intensity bulbs to reduce interior lighting. Don't work under fluorescent lights, and use a floor lamp (that provides soft lighting) instead. Also, position your computer, so the windows are to the side of the screen, and not in front or behind it.

Adjust your monitor/display settings

Never position the computer too close to your eyes, as it increases the risk of strain to a large extent. As experts suggest, keep it slightly below eye level and around 20-28 inches away from your face. Adjust the display settings, and make sure that it's not too bright or too dim. Adjust the text size, contrast, and color temperature as well.

Take frequent breaks

It's important to take frequent breaks while working at a computer, at least four to five minutes. All you need to do is stand up, take a short walk, and stretch your arms, neck, shoulder, legs, and back. This will provide relaxation to your eyes, and reduce the risk of strain, dryness, and itchiness. What's more, this helps reduce fatigue and eventually promotes your productivity at work.

Blink more often

Studies have shown that people blink less often while staring at a computer screen. In this time, the tear fluids on your eyes' surface evaporate rapidly, which further causes eye strain, dry eyes, and fluctuating vision. So, it's suggested to blink at least 20 times every minute, throughout the day. This will moisten your eyes, and prevent the risk of any such issues.

Use computer specs

As doctors suggest, using computer specs is a must at your work. This protects your retina from the screen's blue light, and also helps you focus more on the screen. In turn, this prevents the risk of various eye-related issues significantly. However, make sure to talk with an eye care professional and get your specs customized.

So, don't take your eyes for granted!
