It’s hard to get rid of bad habits but unlearning bad habits is just as important as picking up good and productive ones.

Doing something frequently makes you fall into a routine. Just like your positive habits, negative habits manifest with time. However, unlike positive actions, negative actions stop you from reaching your true potential. In fact, they could also make you risk your physical and mental health while throwing your energy, time and resources down the drain. It is not easy or comfortable to unlearn bad habits. It is a process and it takes time. However, with perseverance and patience, you can unlearn anything and turn your life into something more tasteful.

Accept And Acknowledge

The first step towards unlearning a bad habit is to acknowledge and accept that you have a problem. A bad habit is just like an addiction. Owning up your bad habit is the first thing to do if you want to get rid of it. Moreover, accepting that you have a bad habit makes your realize how you were as a person before you decided to make a change. This motivates you and gives you strength towards working on it. Once you accept your reality, you will be more motivated to change it.

Identify The Trigger

Recognizing what triggers you into acting the way you do is the next step towards unlearning a bad habit. This will give you a clear picture of what not to do. Realize your flaws and your negative inclinations that could push you to the dark side. It will also help you control your actions when they appear. Your triggers are the source of your problem. Once you spot them, half of your job is done.

Expect Failures

Failures are bound happen when you attempt to unlearn a bad habit. It is called a habit for a reason and no matter how hard you try to avoid failures; you are likely to have a few falls. However, do not give up on yourself and instead, get up, dust yourself and begin the process again. Failure does not mean that it is the end of the world. You stumble and you fall. You pick yourself up and you move on.

Engage your willpower as much as you can. If you decide on doing something to unlearn your bad habit, be committed to that goal and see it through.
