One of the toughest institutions to get into, the Indian Institute Of Technology (IIT) is a dream of many science students. But with an acceptance rate of just 0.7% for many students, it remains an unfulfilled dream. That is why those who get a chance in the IIT are considered to be the brightest students in the country. Where IIT is considered to be the mecca of science and technology in India, not all IITians turned out to be engineers or scientists. There have been IITians who have given more weightage to their dreams and dared to sacrifice their dear IIT degrees.
These IITians have chosen a different path and made it big in the Entertainment industry:
Jitendra Kumar
This 30-year-old actor from the small town of Khairthal in Alwar district, Rajasthan is known for his character of JeetuBhaiyya in various TVF web series. But you may don’t know that apart from acting he is also credible in his academics. Jitendra Kumar a.k.aJeetu is an IITian and has done his graduation in civil engineering. This actor has recently won a Filmfare OTT award in the category of Best Actor Comedy Series (Male) for his performance in the Amazon Prime series Panchayat.
Rahul Ram
The famous bass guitarist of the popular Indian Ocean band, Rahul Ram is also an IITian. Rahul joined the musical band in the year 1991. He studied at St. Stephens College and did his Masters in Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. Even after hailing from a family of academic background, Rahul enjoyed playing the bass guitar more than his studies. He is considered to be one of the top bassists in India and has composed songs for many movies like Gulaal, Peepli Live and Black Friday.
ArunabhKumar
An IIT Kharagpur graduate, Arunabh Kumar is the co-founder of one of the most famous web entertainment companies,TheViralFever.com. After graduating from IIT he got a job at the United States Air Force but he left that job to pursue his dreams. His first creation was Engineer’s Diaries which was rejected by MTV. After which he founded TVF and created shows which became overnight sensations.
Jag Mundhra
Jag Mundhra is a renowned film director in India. He created many popular movies like Shoot on sight, Apartment, Sandstorm, etc. He did his MS in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay before switching to a PhD program in motion pictures at Michigan State University.
Chetan Bhagat
One of the most popular writers in India, Chetan Bhagat is also an IIT pass out. He did his Mechanical engineering from IIT Delhi. He is the author of some bestselling and internationally popular novels including ‘Five Point Someone,’ ‘The 3 Mistakes of My Life’ and ‘One Night @ the Call Center’ and ‘Two States’. His books have also turned into movies that have been quite successful. Some of the major films based on his books are - 3 idiots, Two States, Kai Po Che and Half Girlfriend.
Apart from the above names, Nitin Gupta, AshutoshMatela, Biswapati Sarkar, BiswaKalyanRath are some of the IITians who made it big in the Entertainment Industry.
