The work of these imaginative artists has altered the definition of what is typically seen as art!

Before the 20th century, there was a sense of classicism in painting and other visual mediums, such as sculpture. Post-1900, due to a few world-altering events and the industrial revolution preceding them, a lot of new ideas were injected into paintings. Some of these concepts include entire art movements that were dedicated to reforming the inherent viewing practises. The works of the era themselves transcended the traditional norms of painting and left an indelible mark on how any work of art is critiqued and perceived today. To learn more about the works of these painters, read to the very end!

Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali's work is associated with the surrealist movement. The Surrealists were a group of artists who, in response to the death and destruction witnessed in the First World War, decided to abandon logic. According to them, logic didn't serve a purpose as the world was almost on the brink of collapse, led by logical means. They instead chose to express themselves by working in a stream-of-consciousness way that defied logic and was more in tune with what they felt. This brought about a huge change in painting, and Salvador Dali's work in particular was very influential. Works like 'The Persistence of Memory' and 'The Elephants' are among his most notable.

Edward Hooper

Edward Hooper painted portraits of loneliness in modern American life. His paintings can be associated more with philosophy than other artworks. Existentialism and alienation are the most common themes in his work. The two you should check out to get a sense of his unique oeuvre are 'Nighthawks' and 'Automat'.

Andy Warhol

Warhol was a multimedia artist but is especially known for his paintings, which illustrate the effect of captivity in his reality. He used to paint singular objects, which are products of a recollection in memory. This was also the time when cinema had taken over as the most popular medium; therefore, there were obvious influences from films and popular culture in his works. His masterpieces include works such as 'Campbell's Soup Cans' and 'Shot Marilyns'. His style is called 'American Pop Art'.

Jean-Michel Basquiat

Basquiat started his work at the end of the twentieth century, and his style had a deep influence on graffiti and other forms of street art. He is the most modern representation of an artist, and he also took influence from his African-American heritage. He was considered the protege of Andy Warhol, who was a huge supporter of his work. Among his works, you can check out 'Flesh and Spirit' and 'La Hara'.
