Impact of the internet on media.

The introduction of the internet or global connectivity brought change to different sectors and impacted media too.

Today, the internet creates a connection between 3 billion people. It also provides access to the pool of information and allows services using advanced gadgets. Internet successfully created a world in which global friendship is encouraged, and travel for work is not required.

Originally the idea behind the internet was to create a connection among academic institutions and research labs. However, it made its way through different communities in society. Somewhere, the change brought by the involvement of the internet is compared to Gutenberg’s press, aeroplanes,

internal combustion engines and electricity.

The internet is unable to fulfil its potential for the following reasons.

Internet policies led to the loss of income for several communities. According to the intellectual property rights are related to copyright infringement, trademark infringement and patent infringement. Internet applies this policy through piracy and scraping. As a result, the income of journalists, authors, artists and developers is reduced, and eventually degrades the quality of the content available online.

The internet gets restricted to certain boundaries. The rigidness of the licensing contracts and practices followed by the internet regulate the availability of valuable information online. Either that information is unavailable on the internet or is hard to find.

Internet raised the difficulty level for businesses. Various companies are facing issues to create sustainable content to promote their businesses online as the advertisements are inadequate. The legacy regulation also restricts them from charging for information displayed on the global web portal.

Internet contents lack authenticity. Today, users are losing their trustworthiness in the quality of the content available online. It is so because the amount of false and misleading information is increasing, which leads to different situations, such as political debate, extremist movements and terrorism.

However, experts came out with solutions to deal with such problems.

Better licensing technologies get implemented to ensure the development and distribution of protected information on global web portals.

Set up better systems for reviewing the versioning, reputation and authenticity of the content. These systems are responsible for removing any inadequate content from the internet. It will create jobs in the sustainable IT economy too.

Media companies generate profits from our data which helps them with their business model for target advertisement. The online information allows them to operate our web pages, preferred notifications and others by bidding on gender, age and location.

Until and unless the companies are not negatively using online information, the internet has worked in its favour to a great deal.
