Incorporating plants in your home: How it benefits the mind and soul
An indoor garden is like a refuge from the outside world. Whether you inhabit a small apartment or a big mansion, plants add to the visual beauty of any place. In fact, if you take a quick look at any influencer’s house/room, you will notice how houseplants are the current fashion statement.
But, don’t look at it as a mere aesthetic piece. Plants, just like any other living organism, interact with your mind and soul. As we’ve been learning right from kindergarten, plants freshen up the air by releasing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide. So, keeping them in your houses will purify the air and keep you much healthier than you think. In fact, a research by NASA revealed that houseplants can purify the air by up to 87% in a day. But if you still haven’t made up your mind about whether you need a houseplant, let us give you more reasons as to why it’s a choice worth making!
- Purifies the air – As we already mentioned to you earlier, plants help in removing up to 87% of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For the uninitiated, VOCs include formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. These are present in various things like rugs, paint, fibres, cigarette smoke, books, etc. Research shows that plants absorb these and trap them into the soil.
- Keeps you physically fit– Many are not aware of the ‘sick building syndrome’. Basically a study showed that people tend to have health problems like sore throat, headaches and allergy problems due to indoor pollution. Researchers have been publishing papers every now and then to show how indoor plants decrease fatigue, colds, and flu-like symptoms. They’re even said to reduce blood pressure!
- Boost your mental health – Taking care of a plant is often prescribed as a mental well-being activity by therapists. From reducing stress levels to a decrease in depressive mood, plants will give you happiness just as same as a warm cup of coffee or tea on a rainy day.
- Creating a symbiotic relationship – As you love and grow your plant, it starts off a beautiful connection between you and your green babies. One may be adding plants in their house to increase aesthetic beauty but as they keep nurturing, watering and watching their plants grow, it gives a sense of satisfaction.
