Indian male discus throwers, having made a name already

Applying their strength and grit, covering the farthest distance this sport is rushing

The discus throw is a track and field event that involves the athletes to throw a heavy disc at a far distance, all in an attempt to mark a farther distance. Believe it or not, discus throw is an ancient sport that beautifully has made inroads into Olympics. Here is a list of Indian-made discus throwers from India.

Parduman Singh Brar

In the shot put and discus throw, Brar is known for being one of the few Indians to have won multiple medals at the Asian Games. The athlete has been India's national champion in the shot put and discus throw events in the 1950s. At the 1954 Asian Games, Brar won gold medals in the shot put and discus throw events. These achievements made him the first athlete in Asia to have achieved the feat. Brar went on to win another gold medal in the shot put and bronze in the discus throw in the 1958 Asian Games, followed by a silver in the discus throw at 1962 games which were also his last appearance. Brar was bestowed with the Arjuna Award in 1999 for his contribution to Indian sports.

Praveen Kumar Sobti

The great Bheem of Indian television, Praveen Kumar Sobti, has also had an illustrious career as a sportsperson. Before he joined the Indian film industry, Sobti was busy attracting the limelight to international sports events. Apart from being an actor and politician, Sobti was an ace hammer and discus thrower. As an athlete, he has won four medals - two gold, a silver in the Commonwealth Games - at the Asian Games.

VikasGowda

Discus thrower and shot putter, Mysore-based athlete VikasGowda is known for his personal best throw, which was 66.28 meters and became the Indian national record in the discus throw. At the 2012 London Olympics, Gowda qualified for the finals with a throw of 65.20 m finishing eighth. VikasGowda was a Padma Shri awardee in 2017.

Anil Kumar

Kumar’s personal best throw is 64.37 meters that he accomplished in 2007. However, the same year Kumar was found guilty of norandrosterone doping.

AkashAntil

A track and field athlete, Antil competes in the discus throw. AkashAntil rose to fame with his sport after winning the silver medal at the 2007 South Asian Junior Athletics Championships. While his first gold medal win was in Asian Championships in 2013 with a throw of 64.90 meters, Antil went on to win the discus throw event at the Commonwealth Games next year, making him the second Indian to win a Commonwealth gold medal.
