Ingredients to avoid in a hair product

Be careful while buying hair care products and avoid the following ingredients.

We do so many things to take care of our hair, from oiling to shampoo to a hair mask, spa and whatnot. But while buying these products what we all look at is whether it conditions our hair or not or helps in hair loss or not, but hardly we look at the actual ingredients of the product. Where the other problems are important to address, they should not come with a cost to your health. Studies have found out that shampoo, conditioner and many other synthetic hair care products come with a lot of harmful chemicals that may be good for appearance but slowly affects your health. That is why it is important to look for the ingredients before buying any skincare or hair care product. Try to avoid the following ingredients in any of your hair care products.

 Parabens

Parabens are preservatives used to prevent the growth of bacteria in cosmetic formulations. Usually, they are present in the form of methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isobutylparaben, etc in hair products. They are known to be endocrine disruptors and can cause the growth of cancerous cells in our bodies. They are easily absorbed by the skin and scalp and can cause harm to your body.

 Diethanolamine

Diethanolamine (DEA) is a type of foaming agent that is used in shampoos and conditioners to reduce surface tension so that water-soluble and oil-soluble ingredients can blend together. This ingredient has been banned in Europe as it has been linked to cancerous growth in animals.

 Benzene

Benzene is one of the most common chemicals found in hair care products, especially in hair dyes. But it has been found out that it does more harm than good in the body. The American Cancer Society has declared that there’s a strong link between benzene and immune system toxicity, leukaemia, and other cancers of the blood cells. Even an expectant mother’s exposure to benzene may also cause developmental damage to the fetus. But still, this ingredient has been widely used in the cosmetic industry.

 Triclosan

Triclosan is another ingredient that can create havoc on our health.

It is used in many hair products to prevent bacterial contamination, but research has found out that they are carcinogenic and often cause skin irritations. This ingredient is known to cause hormone disruptions, which can lead to cancer and affect fetal development. Although the use of this ingredient in antibacterial soaps has been banned in the United State, they are still widely used in shampoos. Thus, it is important to look for this ingredient while avoiding harmful substances in a product.

Along with these above ingredients, also avoid sulphates, alcohol, Sodium hydroxide, Cocamidopropyl betaine and Formaldehyde.
