IPL Recap: Four Record Which May Never Be Broken

The quicker the pace of cricket, the quicker the speed of records getting made and broken. But there are four records in the IPL which are unlikely to be broken any time soon

The 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League is already in progress and we can expect some thrilling clashes in the days to come. Some new records are also likely to be etched in the history books whereas a few old records may be shattered. However, in our book of thoughts, there are four records which are likely to remain intact in the ongoing season. In the following paragraphs, take a look at those four untouchable records.

Virat Kohli’s sensational season

It was borderline funny that despite Virat Kohli schooling the bowlers with 973 runs in a single season, RCB fans were disappointed that the skipper did not touch the 1000-run mark.

Kohli was on fire in IPL 2016 as the right-hander struck 937 runs from 16 games including four centuries – the highest by any batsman in a single IPL edition. Kohli scored at an average of over 80 which included seven half-centuries and struck 83 fours and 38 sixes in the edition. Who can break that? Perhaps Kohli himself.

Chris Gayle’s 30-ball century

Veteran opener Chris Gayle holds the record for the fastest IPL century. He registered the feat in the 31st match of the Indian Premier League 2013. Taking advantage of the small boundaries of the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Gayle plundered an unbeaten 175-run knock against Pune Warriors India.

Gayle celebrating his epic knock

Gayle broke the record for the fastest century in IPL which was held by Yusuf Pathan, who did it in 37 balls in the 2010 edition of the IPL. Gayle clubbed 17 sixes during his ton – the most by any batsman in an IPL innings.

Mumbai Indians’ 146-run win

In IPL 2017, Delhi’s batting line-up was routed by Mumbai Indians. Chasing a massive total of 213, Delhi were skittled out for 66 in just 13.4 overs.

With the win by a massive 146-run margin, MI became the first team to qualify for the play-offs in the 2017 season. The win is the biggest victory (by runs) in the IPL.

Highest team total

Another record held by Royal Challengers Bangalore is that of the highest team total in the IPL (264).

With Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers making their top order and the minuscule Chinnaswamy Stadium to cash in, the franchise beat the Pune Warriors bowlers into submission. This was the same match in which Gayle struck 175, complemented by AB de Villiers’ 31 off just 8 balls, to reach the 264-run total.

Anything that Gayle touched that day, turned to gold. If 175* wasn’t enough, he picked up two wickets in the only over he bowled to hand Royal Challengers Bangalore a victory by 130 runs.
