IPL Recap: Top Five Team Totals in IPL History Till 2023

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers smacked 109 and 129* respectively and beat the GL bowlers into submission.

In 2008, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) plundered 222/3 from their 20 overs in the first-ever IPL innings on the back of Brendon McCullum’s 73-ball 158 not out and the IPL batsmen haven’t slowed down since. In short, the Indian Premier League has often witnessed teams scoring massive runs to set a target above 200 on numerous occasions.

Here are the top five highest totals in IPL history.

263 – RCB against PWI

Boundaries are not big enough when Chris Gayle is in his element. But when the match is played at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium, even edges fly over the ropes. On one such day against an ordinary Pune Warriors bowling, Gayle decided to get going.

Gayle clobbered the highest individual score in IPL history, blasting 175* off just 66 balls, which included 13 fours and 17 sixes. AB de Villiers did his bit to swell the total further. The Proteas struck an 8-ball 31 to take RCB to a total of 263/5 from their 20 overs. RCB won the match by 130 runs.

257 – LSG against PBKS

At the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium on April 28, 2023, Lucknow Super Giants scripted the second highest score set by an IPL team. Against the Punjab Kings, Marcus Stoinis scored 72 runs off 40 balls whereas Kyler Mayers added 54 runs off 24 balls. Ayush Badoni also joined the party, hitting 43 runs off 24 balls. In reply, the Punjab Kings only managed 201 runs.

248 – RCB against GL

The record for the second-highest team total in IPL history is also held by RCB. If it was brute hitting from Gayle against Pune, it was the class of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers which took them to 248 against Gujarat.

Both Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers scored hundreds in the game, and when that happens, records are guaranteed to tumble. Again, it was the Chinnaswamy Stadium which became witness to the spectacle.

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers smacked 109 and 129* respectively and beat the GL bowlers into submission. The knocks led to a massive 144-run victory for RCB.

246 – CSK against RR

Murali Vijay is known for his silken touch in red-ball cricket, but there were days when he bossed the T20 circuit as well. Playing one such game for Chennai against Rajasthan, Vijay clubbed 127 off just 56 balls.

Vijay was unstoppable on the day and struck 8 fours and 11 sixes. He received good support from AlbieMorkel who scored a 34-ball 62 to take Chennai to what was the highest team total in the IPL at the time.

The 246-run mountain was too high to climb for Rajasthan, but they still did well to reach 223/5.

245 – KKR against KXIP

In IPL 2018, the Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata went all out to put 245 runs on the board against Punjab.
