Is your cat sad? Reasons and signs

Cats do get sad sometimes, and with proper attention and care, it can be short lived.

Its common knowledge that cats know they are the greatest beings, meant to be worshipped. I mean, they were worshipped in Ancient Egypt for a reason, But, these smart felines do get sad, and sometimes depressed. The shift in a cat’s behavior is noticeable to the cat families, especially if the agile cat tends to sleep all day.

There are many reasons why a cat maybe sad. Here’s some of the possibilities.

Injury

Injuries can make your cat to retreat from things they usually love. Lingering pain from a past injury, recuperating from a surgery can cause discomfort that can make a cat sad. A check up from the vet is better than a home test.

Illness

Illness can cause you cat to feel sad. A cat might stop being active if moving pains them. The discomfort they feel will make them move less, eat less, communicate less and even hiss at others.

Loss of a loved one

Contrary to what we generally believe, cats can form emotional closeness to a family member or another pet. Loss of a family member or if its favourite person leaves home, that could make them sad. It is because it has formed a connection and not seeing them as much will make them sad.

Signs to look for if you think your cat is sad

Change in vocalization

Cat have change in voices, almost similar to mournful yowls. If your cat meows way less than it used to, or has stopped responding to you altogether, there are chances your cat is sad.

Showing signs of aggression or fear

Cats who are sad tend to be more reactive. Little things can cause aggression in them and they might lash out.

Sleeping more than usual

Cats nap a lot. Sad cats do it even more. If you see your cat ditching their favorite spot and napping in an unfamiliar place, it is a sign they are sad.

Hiding

A sad cat loses interest in doing things that it once enjoyed. They may hide and retreat from fun activities. Likewise, a shy cat may become clingier and in need of attention.

No longer social

Does your cat who napped on your friend’s lap no longer like being around other people? Do they keep away from company altogether? Chances are your cat is sad.

Not eating much

If your cat who usually gets extra excited for food and now, they barely eat at all? Do they shirk away from their favorite treats? It could be a sign that cat is sad.
