Ishan Kishan's lost rhythm

Ishan Kishan was in red-hot form in IPL 2020, smashing 516 runs from 14 matches with the best of 99. Kishan batted at an average of 57.33 in the competition with a strike rate of 145.76. He struck four half centuries in the competition and hit 36 fours and 30 sixes. In fact, his six count was most among all batsmen in the season.

Kishan was also in some good hitting form in India's domestic circuit and did well both in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy, hitting sixes for fun.

As a result, he got a call up for the Indian team for the T20 series between India and England played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Kishan started briskly on debut, opening the batting for India and struck 56 runs off just 32 balls with 5 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 175. He was awarded the Man of the Match as India won by 7 wickets.

However, he lost his rhythm in IPL 2021 and could score just 73 runs from five opportunities at an average of 14.60 and a strike rate of 82.95. The Indians also did not get off to a good start in the season as a result of which, he was dropped from the side.

Kishan is a very talented wicket keeper batsman from the state of MS Dhoni in Jharkhand and is rising through the ranks of Indian cricket rapidly. The youngster has scored 2505 runs from 102 T20 matches at an average of 27.83 and a strike rate of 131.42 with two centuries and 13 half centuries.

His overall IPL record is also quite decent with him having scored 1284 runs from 56 matches at an average of 27.31 and a strike rate of 131.96. His best of 99 in the competition came in IPL 2020 when he almost took Mumbai over the line but was holed out in the deep. Kishan has struck 7 half centuries in the competition while hitting over 100 boundaries and 66 maximums.

There is massive competition for the spot of the wicket keeper batsman in the Indian team. With Rishabh Pant on a decline, KL Rahul had moved ahead in the pecking order but Pant reclaimed the spot after his brilliant returns in Australia.

Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan are also in the mix. Consequently, Kishan does not have any room for failure and has to be consistent to remain in contention.
