You know how the popular home remedies goes! But how many of them are real and how many of them are jus fads? Holding your breath when you get hiccups probably works. But does starving a fever make it any better? Home remedies have been passed on through generations and while some are indeed backed by science, others are followed blindly to no effect. Here are some of the most popular home remedies that would disappoint you heavily!

Epsom Bath Salts Can Get Rid Of Sore Muscles

One of the popular home remedies suggest that any time you have a sore muscle, you should take a long bath using Epsom salts. The remedy probably originated from the assumption that Epsom salts are nothing but magnesium sulphate that work well for curing a sore muscle. However, no medicinal evidence suggests that drenching yourself in an Epsom salt bath can soothe your sore muscles. It is because when you are taking a bath in Epsom salts it is next to impossible for the minerals of the said salt to enter your muscles through your skin. However, taking a bath in warm water would definitely do the job. In fact, scented bath salts in warm water baths would make the experience more calming and relaxing for you, but that’s about it!

Baking Soda Can Cure A Heartburn

When it comes to indigestion resulting from an acid reflux, an alkaline substance may help in balancing your inner chemistry and relieve your symptoms. However, directly taking in baking soda is not that great of a solution. In fact, ingesting baking soda when you are already feeling uneasy because of the acid reflux may end up making you feel more uncomfortable as the baking soda will only expand once it gets into your stomach. You will be much better with a simple antacid rather!

Warm Milk Before Bed Will Help You Sleep

If you are struggling with insomnia and cannot put yourself to sleep, some home remedies suggest you to drink warm milk before bed. The reason behind this popular home remedy is that milk has tryptophan which could help you sleep. However, science suggests that the concentration of tryptophan found in milk is not enough to make you feel sleepy. So, unless it’s a placebo effect, milk would not work!
