Jemimah Rodrigues, a strange exclusion

Jemimah Rodrigues is one of the most prodigious batting talents that India possess.

Unfair treatment

It was strange that Jemimah Rodrigues was not included in the Indian squad for the 2022 ODI world cup and Yastika Bhatia was given preference over her.

While Bhatia is a very talented player, she does not match the class of Jemimah Rodrigues who is among the best batters in Indian cricket alongside Smriti Mandhana and even beats Mandhana when it comes to technical proficiency.

Match-winning effort

"My height is the same but mental thing has changed a lot. In the last few years, from the last Sri Lanka tour, the journey hasn't been very smooth and there have been a lot of ups and downs," Rodrigues said after her Player-of-the-Match performance against Sri Lanka ahead of the Commonwealth Games. "I also had the opportunity in the last few months to talk with cricketers like Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant and others. They actually told that these moments define you and prepare you for something greater that's coming. If you look at it [in a] negative way it is not going to help. But these are the moments that define you as a cricketer. I was blessed to speak to them and some of our team-mates.

"I have become calmer in this time and have understood the value of having good relationships… my family who have been there. The last few months have helped me understand even my game better. This is the cricketer's life - nobody's life is smooth and what I am learning is to get better every time.

Back among the runs

She did extremely well in the inaugural edition of the Women's Hundred and got a few matches during the T20 Internationals on the India tour of Australia before the world cup where she did well as well.

But it was the call of Indian head coach Ramesh Powar that she was not included in the squad. Be that as it may, she had a brilliant women's T20 Challenge 2022 where she was among the top 5 run scorers, making 90 runs from just two innings at an average of 45 and a strike rate of 138.46 with the best of 66.

She was called up on the India tour of Sri Lanka and did a fine job, finishing as India's best batter in that T20Is.
