List of migratory birds that fill India with colorfulness and beauty

“A bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song” – Maya Angelou.

Every year we feel delighted to listen to such songs from a variety of birds coming to India from different parts of the world. Plenty of birds find refuge in India as they come either from the pinching cold of the North or the excessive heat of the south and west. They visit India each and every year because the particular climate provides them the perfect escape from these extreme weather conditions. They not only beautify India but also increase the natural diversity of this country. Here in this article we have picked some of the fascinating ones to elaborate in detail and they are categorized as the winter birds and summer birds. So, let’s start looking at them

Siberian Cranes, an endangered species

It is a distinctive species and an endangered one from the crane family. Throughout the year western Siberia is the home of this species but in the winter it undergoes a long journey of 4000 miles to India to get rid of that deadly cold weather which does not provide even proper food to them. They can be seen majorly in two places - the Keoladeo Ghana National Park or the Bharatpur National Park which has been declared a world heritage site because of the Siberian Crane as they travel almost half of the globe to reach India.

Greater Flamingo, a journey from Anda Bet to Rann of Kutch

Flamingos are of two kinds- great and lesser flamingos. They both are migratory birds but lesser flamingos migrate within India whereas greater flamingos start descending into Flamingo city to an island of Rann of Kutch named Anda Bet which is the nesting site of this species. In the year 2011 around 10 lakh flamingos were recorded in the month of October only.

Asian Koel, one of the summer soarers

“Sometimes when I wake up to the melodious alarm of Koel’s cooing…My day is lyrical” – so rightly said about the Asian Koel who migrate from Singapore to India each and every year. This bird looks heavenly with its dark coloured feather, bloodshot eyes and mesmerizing voice. In India, the crow becomes the victim because of this bird as the Koel lays eggs in the nest of the crow.

Overall, we can say that India is surely capable of providing a suitable environment for the birds of these two types.
