Mariana Trench: 6 things to know about the deepest part of the ocean
Nature tends to surprise us, and oceans are the most exciting and mysterious, let’s dive in to learn more about the deepest part of the sea.
It’s a known fact that oceans are deep and anything more than 200 meters is considered as the deep sea. Near the island of Guam lies Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the ocean. It is crescent-shaped 2550 km long and 69 km wide. Its depth was first measured by the Challenger expedition, a scientific program that helped make many discovering about oceans. Let’s look at some of the interesting facts about the Mariana Trench.
1. Deepest point
The deepest point in the Mariana Trench is called Challenger’s deep. It is named after HMS Challenger which explored its depth for the first time and measured it.
2. How it was formed?
It is said that it is created due to the collision of earth’s tectonic plates. When these plates collide, one plate goes beneath the other, thus forming a trench.
3. How deep, is it?
It is 36,037 feet deep. If that figure does not make much sense to you then in simple words, Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, if ever placed in Mariana Trench, it would still be underwater by a mile. Talk about depth!
4. Has anyone gone to the end of the Trench?
The answer is yes, but only three people have successfully scaled the depths of the Mariana Trench. In 1960, scientist Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh became the first people to have reached the bottom of Mariana Trench in Bathyscaphe named Trieste. However, they were only able to stay there for a few minutes. Hollywood’s acclaimed director James Cameroon became the third person to go the end of the Trench. Piccard and Walsh were not able to bring back any images as their descent caused the slit to stir up. Cameroon, however, got not just pictures but a full documentary which you should check out.
5. Does any sea creatures live there?
Even though Mariana trench is devoid of all the light and the water pressure equals to 48 jets, marine life is surviving down there. We came across many Crustaceans, Jellyfishes, translucent snailfish and many other microorganisms.
- What else is in there?
With the help of technology, scientists are studying and discovering many new things about oceans. Who knows what secrets oceans still hides in itself?
