Math-a-magic! Dispelling some common misconception about Math
Are you scared of Math? Are you convinced that you need to have a ”Math gene” to succeed? It’s time to change that notion.
Mathematics has earned an awful name for itself in the brain of a student. Often students spend their life fearing and cursing the subject. It is considered boring, tedious, and very often as a subject, that genius can study. We are here to dispel some of the age-old myths regarding Math.
- You should have a “Math Gene”
The most common misconception is that one should have a “Math Gene” to ace Mathematics. It is just like assuming that you should have a genius bone in your body to read. Mathematics can be learned with a positive attitude and a very supportive environment that focuses not only on creativity but also on problem-solving.
- You should cram a lot of formulas, equations and rules
Another misconception about Math is that you should know theorems and formulas by heart, to solve a problem. It is much more important to understand the concept behind the equations and formulas. Math does not have one way of approaching a problem. If you understand the concept fully, you could solve the problem in a different way and witness several “Eureka” moments yourself.
- Some people can’t do Mathematics
It is often said that an analytical person is very good at Math in comparison to someone good with language and arts. The truth is that everyone is born with a keen mathematical sense. If you present one hand full of chocolates and one hand with only one chocolate to even a one-year-old, he too would know which hand to choose.
- Math won’t help you in the future
This fact is baseless, and it seems to be made by someone who does not know ways of the world. We need Mathematics at every step of our life. Otherwise, how would you calculate your monetary gains and losses, or how do you fill your tax returns without any knowledge of Math?
- Math isn’t fun!
No, Math is not dull. Neither are the people who love it. Our education system should be blamed for that misconception. But over the years, educators have found fun ways to teach the concept that aren’t boring and enhances the rational and problem-solving skill in the kids. Thanks to technology, there are various apps available that teach concepts in a fun and creative way.
We need to understand everyone learns at their own pace, with patience and in a conducive environment, every child can fall in love with Math.
