Only three England batsmen have scored more than 30 centuries across formats in international cricket. 39 Joe Root Joe Root still has at least five years of top level cricket left in him. He has already overtaken Alastair Cook as the England batsman with most international centuries across formats.
Root has a total of 16280 runs from 293 matches at an average of 49.48. He has also struck 90 half centuries and has the best of 254.
The skipper was in sensational form in the test series against India in 2021. He ended the four-match affair with 564 runs at an average of 94 and the best of 180 not out. Root struck as many as three centuries and one half century in the series and was by far the leading run getter followed by Rohit Sharma.
38 Alastair Cook Most of Alastair Cook's finest performances came in test cricket. Cook ended his career in 2018 with a total of 15737 runs across formats from 257 matches.
He had an average of 42.88 with 38 centuries to his name. Cook struck 76 half centuries and was dismissed on a duck on 16 occasions.
It seemed that the left hander had a couple of more years of top-notch cricket left in him but as he said during his retirement, he was mentally burnt out. Clearly, he still had the game to achieve something incredible as he continues to represent Essex at the county level.
Regardless, Cook will be considered one of the best batsmen to ever don the England jersey.
32 Kevin Pietersen Kevin Pietersen might not be leading this list but many still rate him to be the best batsman that England has ever produced. The numbers aside, there is little doubt that he played some of the most impactful knocks by an Englishman.
Pietersen scored a total of 32 centuries across formats. He had a 10 year long career spanning from 2004 to 2014 in which he scored 13797 runs from 277 matches at an average of 44 with 67 half centuries to go along with his complement of tons.
(28) Graham Gooch and (27) Andrew Strauss are the other leading English batsmen to score over 25 centuries across formats. The others who succeeded in making it big were Marcus Trescothick, Ian Bell and David Gower.
