Most runs by wicketkeepers in Tests
It is hardly a surprise that Australian wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist holds the record for having scored the most runs by a wicketkeeper in test cricket.
Adam Gilchrist - 5570 runs
Adam Gilchrist made life tough for all the other wicket keeper batsmen in the word. Before him, wicket keepers were expected to be tight with the gloves and give nothing away to the opposition. On top of that, if they could contribute with the bat, it was always looked at as a bonus.
However, after the rise of Adam Gilchrist, who scored 5570 runs from 96 test matches at an average of 47.61, things began to change. The fact that Gilchrist often walked out at number 7 and changed the complexion of the match became a headache for the opposition.
Gilchrist struck 17 centuries and 26 half centuries in his career with the best of 204 not out. He set the template for modern day wicket keeper batsmen which is what the likes of Rishabh Pant, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Quinton de Kock have tried to follow.
Mark Boucher - 5515 runs
The second highest run scorer among wicket keepers in test cricket in South Africa's Mark Boucher who played 147 test matches - the most by any wicket keeper batsman in the history of test cricket.
From 206 innings, Boucher scored 5515 runs at an average of 30.30. While he was not the destructor that Gilchrist was, Boucher was a steady batsman and played several crucial knocks when South Africa had their backs against the wall. His work behind the wickets, particularly against the spinners, was impeccable.
MS Dhoni - 4876 runs
MS Dhoni ended his test career as the third highest run scorer among wicket keeper batsmen. He represented India in test cricket between 2005 and 2014 and scored 4876 runs from 90 test matches. Dhoni averaged 28.09 and struck six centuries and 33 half centuries in his career, with the best of 224.
Alec Stewart - 4540 runs
Alec Stewart was active in test cricket between 1990 and 2003. He represented England in 82 test matches and scored 4540 runs at an average of 34.92, including six centuries and 23 half centuries.
Andrew Flower - 4404 runs
Flower made his test debut in 1992. By the time he finished playing test cricket in 2002, he had scored over 4000 runs at 53.71 with 12 centuries and 23 centuries.
