Most stunning train journeys to take in Scotland

Weve rounded up six beautiful train journey you should try

It would not be wrong to say that Scotland is made up of varying landscapes - lochs, rivers, coastline and mountains. Forgetting the famous Munros would be wrong though just as the artistic towns and cities across the country would. Since Scotland has a lot of land, travellers can take trains if they want to cover it all. We list down six of the best train journeys:

The Borders Railway

This line, which was closed for more than 40 years, was reopened in September 2015. It connects Edinburgh Waverley with Tweedbank, and since its reopening, seven new stations have been added. Interestingly, it is also the longest railway to be constructed in the United Kingdom in a century. You can always hop off at Eskbank to visit Rosslyn Chapel, or continue till Tweedbank if you wish to visit Sir Walter Scott’s home.

Edinburgh to Inverness

If you head north towards Waverley, you will reach Firth of Forth, with the Forth Rail Bridge, which is a Unesco World Heritage Site. The path begins to get steeper and more rugged as you advance and beyond Perth, the train soon enters the Highlands, eventually leading to snow clad mountains. You can either get down at Aviemore or continue on to Inverness.

Strathspey Steam Railway

This train journey takes you through the Cairngorm mountains where you can witness eagles and ospreys. If you are a dedicated railway enthusiast, you can also fire the steam engine itself.

The Kyle Line

This journey leaves Inverness and you can hop off at Kyle of Lochalsh, on the west coast, to witness the Isle of Skye, where you will find seaside B&Bs and luxury clamping pods.

The Far North Line

This passage north out of Inverness and takes you to the mountains and lochs to the top of Scotland until the towns of Thurso and Wick. With a lot of curves and twists, but you will catch a glimpse of picturesque towns on the route. You can hop off on Thurso and also catch the ferry to the Orkney Islands.

The West Highland Line

Last but not the least, this train route is voted as the best railway journey across the world. It connects Glasgow to Mallaig on the west coast. The kids will be excited as ‘this is Harry Potter bridge’ with the famous Hogwarts Express leaving Platform 9 ¾ and heading to this route in several of the films. The bridge is actually the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which has views of Loch Shiel and the Highlander’s memorial.
