Root was first made the captain of the England side in 2017 after Alastair Cook decided to step down following the five match test series against India at the Oval. Root has since captained England in 56 test matches and has won 27 and lost 21.

He has drawn the remaining eight matches. His win loss ratio is 1.28 and win percentage is 48.21 - second only to Michael Vaughan.

26 Michael Vaughan (51) Michael Vaughan might have won 26 test matches for England as captain - one less than Root at the moment - but his win percentage of 50.98 makes Vaughan the only England captain with a win percentage of over 50 among England captains having led the team in a minimum of 35 matches.

Vaughan captained England between 2003 and 2008 in 51 matches. He lost 11 of those while 14 ended in a draw. He had a win loss ratio of 2.36 which remains unparalleled. The former England captain had a loss percentage of just 21.56 which is exceptional.

24 Andrew Strauss (50) Andrew Strauss led England in exactly 50 test matches between 2006 and 2012. He registered 24 test victories and 11 losses while 15 matches that England played under his captaincy ended in draws.

Strauss had a win loss ratio of 2.18 and a win percentage of 48. The contribution that he made to England cricket as an opener is also held in great regard.

24 Alastair Cook (59) Before Joe Root, Alastair Cook led England quite successfully over a period between 2010 and 2016, winning 24 of the 59 matches in which he captained.

Cook lost 22 matches as the England test captain while 13 were drawn. He had a win-loss ratio of 1.09, winning more than 40% of his matches and losing 37.28%.

20 Peter May (41) Peter May led England between 1955 and 1961. England won 20 of the 41 matches under his leadership while losing 10 and drawing 11. He had a win percentage of 48.78.
