We all know of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron man but he is much more than just being an armor-wearing superhero. Here is a list of the best movies of Robert Downey Jr. that are not from Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Charlie Bartlett (2007)

Charlie Bartlett takes the audience back into their high school days as it follows the unbelievable climb of a student from outcast to icon, and observes the cost of his popularity.

Charlie Bartlett is a high school drama where Robert Downey Jr. starred as Nathan Gardener, principal of a high school who locks horns with the titular character, one of his students Charlie Bartlett played by a young Anton Yelchin. Though Robert Downey Jr. is not playing the central character in the movie, yet he shows his acting prowess in a challenging role. It’s a movie you can binge-watch while getting some life lessons.

Chaplin (1992)

Robert Downey Jr. played the comic genius, Charlie Chaplin, to the T in this biopic directed by the Oscar-winning director Richard Attenborough 

This movie showcases the amazing journey of the great Charlie Chaplin from his poverty-stricken childhood to worldwide success. Robert Downey Jr. got a chance to play the titular role of Charlie Chaplin and it remains one of his best performances. It got him critical acclaim and he won BAFTA Award for Best Actor that year and was also nominated for the Oscars and Golden Globe Awards.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Perhaps his most well-known role after Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. plays the famous sleuth Sherlock Holmes in this crime drama directed by Guy Ritchie.  

In this movie adaptation of the famous book ‘Sherlock Holmes’ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the movie shows how the famous detective Sherlock Holmes along with his assistant Mr. Watson tries to prevent murder by a serial killer named Henry Beckwood. The movie came immediately after the first Iron Man movie and was a big success. RDJ won his second Golden Globe award for his near-perfect portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.

Zodiac (2007)

Directed by David Fincher, this movie is based on the true and unsolved case of a series of murders in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Before marking their MCU debuts, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Jack Gyllenhell came together for the crime drama ‘Zodiac’. In this movie, Robert Downey Jr. plays Paul Avery, a crime reporter who along with Police Inspector David Toschi (Mark Ruffalo), Chronicle Editorial Cartoonist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhall) tries to solve down the case of the Zodiac killer who is terrorizing the city with a murder spree.

Due Date

A road trip movie also starring Zach Galifianakis of ‘The Hangover fame’, it is a movie about fatherhood and was directed by Todd Philip.

In this road trip, black comedy movie Robert Downey Jr. plays Peter Highman, an expectant first-time father who due to some unavoidable circumstances has to go on a crazy cross country road trip with an aspiring actor Ethan Tremblay played by Zach Galifianakis. This movie was a big success and a perfect fun movie to binge-watch with friends.
