Being a sound designer involves lots of responsibilities. From deciding the aural experience of the film to record minor sound in details, a sound designer takes care of every aspect related to sound.
A sound designer is responsible to decide what we hear as an audience. They are the ones who record, re-create, compose and edit the sound to improve the storytelling. Like all the other creative fields, some memorable work have been done in sound design which an aspiring sound person should watch and listen. Interstellar
The Christopher Nolan directed Interstellar is a prime example of how one can achieve the unimaginable with great quality of sound design. The movie, set in a fictional world, has great sound design which is an amalgamation of realism and illusion. For creating the actual sound, the filmmakers did dry run with microphones for most of the scenes. For the famous corn field sequence, the sound designers installed two microphones on the each side of the car and did a full silent dry run to get the actual noise and the ambience. Similarly, for the space sequences, they recorded hollow room tones in the spaces where the movie is shot to get the perfect sound.
Malena
The Italian romantic comedy, Malena, is widely acclaimed for it's brilliant sound design. The movie is a learning lesson for aspiring sound designers. In the opening sequence of the film, several continuous shots are used but the main work is done through the magic of sound. The placement is sound is an aspect of sound designing which determines the placement of objects that are there in the world of cinema. Stalker
Andrei Tarkovsky is pure genius. His brilliance lies not only in his art of taking unmatched shots but his emphasis on sound. In the opening sequence of the movie Stalker, the sound design done by the makers is a brilliant example of a great sound design which is taught in film schools. The sequence ahows us that you don't need to shoot everything as it can also be conveyed through sound design. The continuous shot of a room tells a lot of things about where it's situated, the time and weather without any much information. All of it is skillfully conveyed through the use of sound.
