This 2012 drama film by director Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod is based on the 1885 French novel of the same name by Guy de Maupassant. The plot of the film, just like the novel, revolves around a penniless former soldier who is a morally bankrupt schemer called Georges Duroy, played by Robert Pattinson. Set in the 1880s, it shows Georges Duroy making a living as an office clerk in Paris and ends up meeting an old friend, Charles Forestier, played by Philip Glenister.
