There was a time when the world did not have OTT platforms. Therefore, documentaries were limited to film festivals, events, theatres, and YouTube. However, OTT platforms have opened doors to documentaries of every genre. Although there are many OTT platforms in the world today, in this feature, our focus is on Netflix and the best F1 documentaries that are available on the platform.
Senna (No Fear. No Limits. No Equal)- Released years back in 2010, the documentary was premiered at Suzuka, Japan. Directed by Asif Kapadia, the documentary revolves around the life of the legendary Formula One race Ayrton Senna who put Brazil on the F1 map by winning three Formula One world titles. The documentary comprises real unseen footage of Ayrton Senna and one can enjoy Senna’s off-track personality, learn more about his charity work and family life. The documentary also shows Senna’s childhood, how he ventured into Formula One, his rivalry with Alain Prost and finally his accident which took his life in 1994.
Formula One: Drive to Survive- Produced by Box-to-Box Films, Formula One: Drive to Survive is a documentary series that Netflix made after collaborating with Formula One. Formula One wanted to give the fans a closer look at what happens behind the doors, before the races and after the races inside the paddocks and racing teams’ headquarters. Therefore, for a Formula One fan, this series is a must-watch. So far, three seasons have been produced with 10 episodes in each season (30 episodes). The next is likely to release in the first half of 2022.
A Life of Speed: The Juan Manuel Fangio Story- Released last year, the documentary on Netflix comprises several F1 legends such as Fernando Alonso, Mika Hakkinen and Jackie Stewart. Based on the life of the legendary Argentine F1 racer Juan Manuel Fangio, the documentary revolves around the life of Fangio and displays how the legend won five Formula One titles with four different manufacturers in the 1950s. With a running time of 1 hour 32 minutes or 92 minutes, one can enjoy the documentary in the Spanish language with English subtitles or in dubbed English audio, which is also available on Netflix.
Schumacher- Last but not least, the documentary on Schumacher is likely to be released on Netflix soon. Released in 2019, the documentary takes a viewer into the life of seven-time World Champion German legend Michael Schumacher.
