New Zealand's rare away series win against England

New Zealand have toured England on a total of 18 occasions for a test series but have been able to win just three of them. The first time the coveted victory arrived for New Zealand was in 1986. Before that, New Zealand had lost 8 and drawn one series against England in England.

The first time New Zealand toured England was in 1931 when the team suffered a 1-0 defeat in a three-match series. The result in the 1937 3-match series between the two teams was the same.

New Zealand did extremely well to draw the 4-match series against England in 1949 but they suffered a 4-0 defeat on their 5-match test tour of England in 1958.

The 1965 test series between New Zealand and England in England was won by England by 3-0. The series in 1969 and 1973 also went to England. In 1978 and 1983, New Zealand suffered defeats by 3-0 and 3-1 respectively.

1986

When New Zealand won their first ever test series against England in England in 1986, it was a big deal.

After the first match of the series played at Lord's was drawn, New Zealand succeeded in winning the second match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham by 8 wickets. In the third match of the series, played at the Kennington Oval in London, New Zealand succeeded in restricting England to a draw as they took the series 1-0.

1999 The next time New Zealand won a test series in England was in 1999 when they won the 4-match affair by 2-1.

2021 Their most recent victory against England came in 2021, just before the world test championship final, when they beat the home side by 1-0 in a two match series, with many England stars missing.

Matt Henry, Player of the Match for his figures of 6/114, was the star for New Zealand.

"What a way to finish the series. The crowd has been unbelievable, a lot of Kiwi support as well. Incredible, they have come out in numbers and showed great energy. Just knowing how to go about your work and past experiences help. Wicket seemed a bit quicker and we knew it's gonna be a new ball wicket and we always wanted to put pressure and pick wickets in clusters. We had a strong squad for a long time and you just enjoy your role for the team, it doesn't get much better than that," an ecstatic Henry said.
