Northern vs. Southern Thailand: What are the differences?

Lets take a look at best qualities of the countrys northern and southern regions

Thailand is every traveller’s delight and it is easy to just think of various regions of Thailand as one. However, the country is actually split up into a handful of areas and just like everything else in Thailand, these areas also have their own unique characteristics. So, we bring you a list of the best qualities of the country’s northern and southern regions, which will help you pick them once you reach there.

Food

Thailand and its food is incredibly region-specific. So you might like one particular dish in one region but may be disappointed if you have elsewhere. Everything affects the food in Thailand, be it climate, culture or local customs. It sort of changes how they are made and how they taste. However, be it northern or southern, the food all over the nation is great.

Thai food in Northern areas is known as Lanna or Isaan. It is unique and can be found in abundance in Bangkok, which has a number of restaurants. Go for steamed sticky rice which is paired with a red or green chili sauce for dipping. Do not miss the som tum (papaya salad). Do not go here for the seafood and you will have to visit Thailand’s coasts in the Southern region to have them. Must try: Gaeng tai pla (Southern Thai-style fish curry), khao yum (mixed rice and vegetables), and tom somplakrabok (sweet-and-sour fish soup).

Northern Thailand: cities

If you want to visit the North, head to Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pai, and Chiang Rai. Chiang Mai has temples on almost every corner of the city and it is the most popular and flourishing northern city, apart from Bangkok, which is the capital.

In the South region of The Land of Smiles, you will find some of the awe-inspiring, beautiful beaches in the world. These include coastal areas which are part of the Andaman Sea like Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lipe and Koh Lanta. Make sure to also not miss Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. From partying to water sports, it has everything.

Activities

While Northern Thailand is known for its cultural excursions, landmarks, etc, Southern Thailand is famous for its white-sand beaches and bikini-ridden resorts. You will also see a lot of tourists in the latter part who want to come explore the beauty of Thailand.
