Bhutan is very different from the rest of the world when it comes to opening its borders and allowing tourists with a smile and open arms. The country is quite strict, when it comes to allowing tourists to visit there.

In the post-pandemic world, they took time, closely monitored the world, and spent a large period of time thinking about opening their borders for tourists. After taking a few decisions and making new rules, they slowly opened their borders very cautiously before allowing visitors to enter their country.

It opened its borders, after a long wait, on 23 September 2022 through Assam, India and tourists are now able to enjoy the beauty of this closely guarded country. But there are new rules one needs to follow while visiting Bhutan.

We have listed the new rules and you should go through them if you plan to visit Bhutan anytime soon through Assam’s Samdrup Jhongkhar and Gelephu border gate.

If you are fully vaccinated, there is no need to be quarantined but you have to show the certificate of vaccination which should be approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

If you suffered from Covid-19 during the period of the last six months, you have to get proof that you are now totally Covid free and it will save you from the quarantine mandate.

You should have the Covid-19 negative certificate on arrival in Bhutan. The test shall be carried out by RT-PCR from a certified laboratory not earlier than 72 hrs (3 days) before starting the journey from your country of origin.

Children, who are less than 11 years old, need not go into quarantine.

The unvaccinated travelers have to be in quarantine for 5-6 days in Bhutan and get RT-PCR testing done. If you are found negative for Covid-19, then you will be allowed to enter the country.

You need to have travel insurance and it’s necessary for visiting Bhutan. Without travel insurance, you won’t be allowed to enter Bhutan.

Land borders near India will open from 23 September

If you are planning to visit Bhutan via India or you are already in India, you can go to Bhutan through Assam by crossing Samdrup Jongkhar, Gelephu, and Samtse borders. These two places are splendid spots to visit Bhutan.
