Rare occasions when India conceded 1st innings lead on Day 1

When you concede a first innings lead on day 1 of a test match itself, it means that you have been bowled out within the allotted 90 overs. And when that lead in the first innings on day one is substantial, it almost leaves you with nowhere to hide in the test match as you are left chasing your tail through the remaining four days.

147 v SA Ahmedabad 2007/08 After the first match of the three match test series between India and South Africa was drawn, India batted first in the first innings of the second test at Ahmedabad.

The team was bowled out for just 76 within 20 overs, on the back of a 5 wicket haul from Dale Steyn. Makhaya Ntini and Morne Morkel also shared 5 wickets between them.

South Africa posted 494 runs on the board as India made 328 in reply and lost the match by an innings and 90 runs. This lead of 147 is the highest that the team has conceded on day 1 of a test match.

43 v WI Delhi 1987/88 In the first test match of the full blown West Indies tour of India in 1987/88, the home side was bowled out for just 75 within 31 overs courtesy of five wickets from Patrick Paterson and three from Winston David.

Only three Indian batters Arun Lal, Dileep Vengsarkar and Kiran More could reach double figures.

West Indies then took a lead of 43 on day 1 itself. They themselves did not fare very well and were bowled out for 127. India made 327 in the second innings which West Indies chased down quite comfortably with 5 wickets to spare.

42 v Eng Leeds 2021 India were bowled out for just 78 after being put into bat first on day one of the 3rd test match on their tour of England in 2021 at Leeds, with the team losing their first three wickets for just 21 runs.

James Anderson and Craig Overton picked up three wickets each as Ollie Robinson and Sam Curran took two apiece. The team was bowled within 40.4 overs.

England had already taken a 42 run lead by the end of day 1. As expected, the visiting team lost the match by an innings and 76 runs.
