Rassie van der Dussen, dependable as ever

With Faf du Plessis having hung his boots, Rassie van der Dussen is now the mainstay of South Africa's batting line-up.

Mr Consistent

The consistency with which Rassie van der Dussen scores his runs is amazing. You see a South African scorecard and invariably there will be runs against the name of Rassie van der Dussen.

If he fails in one match, it is almost guaranteed that he'll come back with an important knock in the next match and this is what makes the batter so special.

Taking on the onus

AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis were the mainstays of the South African batting line up across formats for the longest time. However, with both batters now having hung their boots, the team banks on the likes of Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen.

QDK has the tendency to get dismissed off glory shots, trying to amp up the run scoring. Rassie van der Dussen doesn't let the team down and has become the meaning of dependability for the South African batting line up over the last couple of years.

His best of 94 not out came against England in South Africa's last match of the super 12 stage in T20 WC 2021. Despite South Africa winning the game by 10 runs, Rassie van der Dussen wasn't pleased with the player of the match award as his team was pipped by Australia on net run rate.

Bitter-sweet

"The Player of the Match award doesn't mean too much in the context, but we knew we had to get a good score. We were asking too much from the bowlers to defend that score in order to get into the semis. At the end of the day, it was a good performance, beating a good side. It's a type of a wicket, where the new batters needed time to get in, you saw that in their innings when they lost wickets," he said after receiving the award.

"So Markram and I tried to get in and get a good total. The three venues are so different. The match against Bangladesh, the pitch was different, it was difficult to bat there. Today it kept low, from the batting point of view it has been quite a challenge to adjust to the three venues. The batting units who have adapted the quickest have been the most successful."

The batter had a good 2021 T20 World Cup and ended up at the top run scorer for South Africa, with 177 runs from 5 matches at an average of 59.
