Reiki and its various benefits

Find out some of the many benefits of this energy healing therapy

For those caught unaware, Reiki is a form of alternative therapy, often referred to as energy healing. It started in Japan in the late 1800’s and in this form of energy healing, the transfer of universal energy is transferred from the practitioner’s palms to their patient. Reiki has been used for centuries in various forms and several people around the world believe in it despite all the skepticism in some circles.

It is said that this transfer of energy by laying on hands can treat many conditions and emotional states. In fact, it can slightly reduce pain as well, however, no studies have shown that it can treat any diseases.

So what is Reiki?

“Reiki” means “mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign” and it originates from Japanese words “rei” (universal) and “ki” (life energy). A type of energy healing, it targets the energy fields around the body, which can stagnate at the spots where there has been physical injury or possibly emotional pain. With the passage of time, these energy blocks can cause illness.

It is believed that improving the flow of energy around the body leads to relaxation, reduces pain, speeds healing, or lowers down symptoms of illness. First developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist called MikaoUsui, it spread to the United States of America through Hawaii in the 1940s, and then to Europe by the 1980s.

Carried out in a peaceful setting anywhere, Reiki involves the patient sitting in a comfortable chair or lying on a table. The practitioner then places their hands lightly over specific areas of injury/pain using different hand shapes. During this time, the transfer of energy takes place and once the practitioner feels that the energy has abated, they remove their hands. Some practitioners also make use of crystals and chakra healing wands to get away with negative energy.

Health benefits

The healing effects are performed by making use of the universal energy, which is known as qi (pronounced as “chi” and known as “prana” in India). It is said that it permeates the body and can be felt by many who tune in to it. Reiki helps in developing emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being as it is “intensely relaxing.”

Reiki is said to be beneficial in cancer treatments, heart diseases, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, infertility, neurodegenerative disorders and autism, among others.
