Robot to Nayak: Six Must Watch Movies by Tamil Director S. Shankar

Shankar is now a director whose movies are highly anticipated across the whole of India.

Shankar Shanmugam, known mostly as S. Shankar or simply Shankar, is a Tamil director who is famous for making big-budget, high-concept movies. He made many superhit movies in Tamil whose Hindi dubbed movies made him famous all over India, especially after the Anil Kapoor-Rani Mukherjee starrer Nayak which was a remake of his own Tamil movie Mudhalvan.

Shankar is known for making grand movies and his movie 2.0 starring Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar is the second most expensive movie in Indian cinema.

  1. Robot

Though Shankar’s earlier movies like Aparichit and Nayak were famous outside South India also, it was the 2010 sci-fi movie Robot (Enthiran in Tamil) that made him a household name.

Robot (Enthiran in Tamil) was a 2010 movie directed by S. Shankar and featured Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai as the lead characters. It was a blockbuster in Tamil Nadu and did pretty well in the Hindi film circles also. Robot was a sci-fi movie with lots of action, CGI, and VFX. It was the costliest Indian movie made till then. The story of the movie revolves around Dr. Vaseegaran, a robotics scientist (Rajinikanth) who creates a robot named Chitti who has a mind of his own and later becomes a menace for human beings after falling into the hands of bad people. It was appreciated a lot for its innovative story and technology used and became a pan-India hit.

  1. Anniyan

The 2005 movie Aniyyan starring Tamil superstar Chiyan Vikram was dubbed as Aparichit in Hindi which was loved by audiences from across the country.

Anniyan dubbed as Aparichit is a 2005 vigilante movie featuring Tamil actor Chiyan Vikram, an honest lawyer who suffers from multiple personality disorder and is mocked by everyone including the girl he loves because of his honesty which seems stupid to others. When he was not able to give punishment to the bad people, his alter ego Anniyan takes over his personality and punishes the criminals. While the Tamil Version was a big hit, its dubbed version Aparichit became one of the most-watched movies on television.

  1. Nayak

Nayak starring Anil Kapoor, and Rani Mukherjee in leads with Amrish Puri, Saurabh Shukla, Paresh Rawal, Jhony Lever, etc is the only Bollywood movie directed by S.Shankar.

Nayak was a 2001 Hindi movie directed by S. Shankar which was a remake of his own Tamil movie Mudhalvan. Nayak was a flop when released but later when people discovered it on television, it became one of the most loved movies of Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee. The movie revolves around a journalist who gets a chance to become Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a day and shows what a CM can do for the betterment of society if he has good intentions. Amrish Puri played the main antagonist in the movie, a crooked and corrupt politician. With multiple re-runs, it is one of the most-watched movies on television with a very high TRP.
