The history of Seoul

The three kingdoms of Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla (BCE 57–CE 688) all sought to seize Seoul because of its strategic location in the centre of the Korean Peninsula. Seoul was taken by whoever had the most powerful military force. The Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) even made Seoul its capital, a position it still holds today, in order to establish a stronghold there.

In the early days of the Joseon Dynasty, Korea's capital was relocated from Kaesong, which is in modern-day North Korea, to Seoul. King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon dynasty, initiated the construction of Gyeongbokgung, meaning "the Palace of Shining Blessings." Additionally, another palace, Changyeonggung, was built by King Sejong, the fourth emperor of the Joseon Dynasty, and expanded by King Seongjong, the ninth emperor of the Joseon Dynasty, to accommodate the royal family of previous kings. Initially, the first palace served as the primary royal residence until it was tragically destroyed during the Japanese invasions in 1592. It remained in ruins for nearly three centuries until its reconstruction in 1865.
