Mahesh Bhatt is a well-known producer and director and he made his directorial debut with the 1974 movie ManzileinAurBhi Hain. He is known for making issue-based movies that balance both the artistic and commercial sides of a movie. Arth (1982) 

Arth starred Kulbhusan Kharbanda, ShabanaAzmi, and SmitaPatil and it was the movie that brought Mahesh Bhatt into the limelight. 

Arth is a demi-autobiographical movie by Mahesh Bhatt and it is a movie that deals with the theme of an extramarital affair. Kulbhusan Kharbanda plays the role of Inder Malhotra who is married to Pooja Inder Malhotra (ShabanaAzmi). Pooja is a typical housewife whose life turns upside down when he gets to know that her husband is having an extra-marital affair with KavitaSanyal (SmitaPatil). The movie got rave reviews and ShabanaAzmi won the Best Actress National Award for her performance in the movie.

Saaransh (1984)

Saaransh is a 1984 movie starring AnupamKher and RohiniHattangadi and it’s a heart-wrenching tale of an elderly couple who lost their only son.

Saaransh marked the debut of AnupamKher, who at the age of 28 played the role of a sixty plus years old man. AnupamKher plays the role of a retired school teacher who is living with his wife played by RohiniHattandagi. Their lives turn upside down when they get the news of their only son’s death. The movie beautifully explores their grief and how they find a purpose in life and fight for a young girl and the injustice she faced at the hand of her oppressors. It was selected as India's official entry for the 1985 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film but it could not make it to the top five.

Though Mahesh Bhatt made acclaimed movies like Arth and Saaransh before, it’s Naam starring Sanjay Dutt which was the first big commercial hit movie by Mahesh Bhatt.

Naam is a 1986 movie starring Sanjay Dutt, Kumar Gaurav, Nutan, Poonam Dhillon, and Amrita Singh. It’s the first commercially successful movie of Mahesh Bhatt and it’s the first movie of Sanjay Dutt after he came back from a drug rehabilitation center in the USA. It revived Sanjay Dutt’s career who plays the role of Vicky who gets trapped in the evil world of crime after getting duped in Hong Kong.
