Shikhar Dhawan and ICC events, a match made in heaven

Shikhar Dhawan hasn't failed in any ICC event for India. The first time he opened the batting alongside Rohit Sharma was in the 2013 Champions Trophy where both the openers had a great time and India ended up winning the tournament without losing a single match.

Since then, Shikhar Dhawan has continued his brilliant relationship with ICC events and has delivered time and again.

In the 2015 world cup, Dhawan kicked off India's campaign with a brilliant 137 off 146 balls. He scored another century and a 45 as India reached the semifinal.

In the 2017 Champions Trophy, Dhawan made 338 runs at an average of 67.6 and ended up as the batsman of the series. He struck a brilliant century against Australia in the 2019 World Cup as well before being ruled out of the event due to a thumb injury.

Unfortunately for the southpaw, he has not been picked in the India squad for the T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman. This was despite Dhawan having a great run in IPL 2021 and amassing over 500 runs.

In the second leg of the tournament, Dhawan regained the orange cap at one point after Delhi Capitals 8-wicket victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Chasing a mediocre target of 135 in Dubai, Dhawan made 42 off 37 deliveries with 6 boundaries and ensured that the capitals won comfortably.

This is what the experienced Indian batter had to say after the match as he dazzled with the orange cap on his head.

“I'm enjoying wearing the cap, I'm enjoying the way I'm timing the ball. Not very true, this surface, it stopped a bit, and we had to plan the game according to the wicket. So it was good to go out there and secure a win. I consciously made an effort to increase the tempo and strike-rate, because I wanted to be an impactful player for my side."

"It was just about the execution. Rabada and Nortje are our gun bowlers. Rabada always gets us the wicket. Nortje has great pace and his game has improved too, so they are troubling the batsmen. Absolutely enjoying being at the top of the table,” Dhawan said.

Shikhar Dhawan still has a lot to offer in the ODI format and will expect to play the 2023 ODI event.
