But this is little comforting to individuals who consider the idea of flying some six miles above the surface of the earth, at a speed of hundreds of miles per hour in a hunk of metal to be unsettling.

While it is not unusual for passengers to have a fear of flying, it is quite difficult to rationalize with them trembling from the nerves. Not even a travel insurance scheme can help you overcome the fear of flying if you have one. It is entirely a personal struggle that some people have to deal with. However, some simple tricks can help conquer or at least cope with the fear of flying, so you don’t have to sacrifice travelling to your phobia.

Avoid caffeine before your flight.

It is important to choose the right beverage before flying if you are nervous. Refrain from drinking any beverage that makes you jittery; it could increase your stress level, making it tougher to stay calm. Instead, drink non-caffeinated herbal tea to calm your nerves.

Use breathing techniques or mediate.

Meditation and breathing techniques can help you focus on your breathing and get into a state of meditation, and this would help you experience the flight completely differently and help you cope with claustrophobia.

Wisely pick a seat to avoid your trigger.

If you are uncomfortable in the air, it is necessary to spend additional time on that choice; after having determined what exactly scares you about flying, pick your seat wisely to avoid the triggers. If you are fearful of heights, avoid window seats. But if looking outside calms you, then park yourself in a window seat.

Talk to flight attendants.

Flight attendants will always be there for you. They will constantly check on you to see how you are doing and will make sure you feel good during your flight. They are trained and up-to-date on all emergency procedures.

Try to sleep

While some flights are short, others can seemingly last forever. Sleep is a great way to pass the time. For particularly long flights, like those with flight paths over the Pacific or the Atlantic Ocean, try to upgrade to a sleeper seat by paying an additional cost.
