Some writers, beyond any comparison
Like all other influences in literature, satire is one of the most well versed and well-known influences in the field of literature. Several famous writers of different languages have included satire in their literary works to make them more interesting for readers across the world, and we all know that laughter is a universal language that everyone understands. Several writers and poets like Alexander Pope, Jonathon Swift, Lord Byron, Nikolay Gogol, Henry Fielding, Samuel Butler, Washington Irving, Clare Buth Luce etc., used satire and metaphors in most of their writings. Some great philosophers of history like Erasmus, Voltaire, Seneca, Profit Duran etc., had a great influence on satire in their philosophical writings. But if we look into the world of Bengali literature, we will get to see a lot of masterpieces. There are a lot of Bengali writers who were especially known for the use of satire to address several societal issues in their writings. Sukumar Ray
Sukumar Ray is like a pole star in the world of Bengali satirical literary works. He is known as the pioneer, and father figure of one special kind of literary improvisation called nonsense mnemonics or nonsense poetry. One of his most famous creations is "Abol Tabol", or Gibberish in English. It remains a masterpiece in the history of Bengali literature. He also wrote some satirical plays like " Laxman er Shaktishel" and many more. " Ha, Ja Ba Ra La", "Abak Jalpan", "Shabdakalpadrum'', "Pagla Dashu",, etc. are some of his evergreen writings that made our childhood so special.
Kaliprosonno Singha
He was one of the most prominent and prolific writers and playwrights of the 19th century. He was famously known by his pen name called " Hutum Pecha", or watching the owl, which was unique in every way. He wrote " Hutom Pyanchar Naksha", which is a masterpiece of satirical Bengali literary works. In this, he criticised the babu culture and urban societal fallacies of Kolkata in the contemporary time in a satirical way that was so witty.
Michael Madhusudan Dutt
Michael Madhusudan Dutta was famous for his Bengali sonnets and satirical plays mixed with the essence of English comedy. Some of his most prominent works include "Buro Shaliker Ghare Ro", in which he exposed the patriarchal nature of the Brahmanical Society, "Ekei Ki Bole Sabhyata", which exposed and ridiculed the Bengalis who followed European culture blindly.
