Stunning bioluminescent places in India

If you want to see some beautiful glowing natural lights at night, then these are the places to visit…

India never falls short of wonders to see and experience. The country has everything, a rich cultural heritage, historical places, beach sides, mountain ranges and much more. But did you know that there are certain places in India where you can witness something truly magical? There are some places in the country where you can see the stunning phenomena called bioluminescence. The way you can see a firefly light up, same way some other plants and animals too have this capability. Commonly called as ‘glow in the dark’, these places will truly be an experience to watch. So read on…

Bangaram Island, Lakshadweep – This tiny island is actually a part of the cluster of islands that form Lakshadweep. While the beach side there is beautiful and quiet, there is something absolutely stunning to see in the night there. After dark, you can witness a bluish-white glow on the water that comes up to the shore. This is because of the presence of phytoplankton, algae, jellyfish, and other sea creatures in the waters.

West Jaintia Hills District, Meghalaya – While Meghalaya in itself holds so much beauty, the West Jaintia Hills district has another magical vision to show. People who visit the forests there have witnessed what they call glowing mushrooms or electric mushrooms. After research it was found that these mushrooms are a new species from the genus Roridomyces. So when there, do not forget to see them!

Juhu Beach, Mumbai – Another sea side which can show you the magic of bioluminescence. This beach in Maharashtra actually shows something called ‘sea sparkle’. The water hitting the shore there emits a sparkly and blue shimmer which is caused due to a micro-organism called Noctiluca scintillans that emits light when disturbed. So choose a starry night and go see this sparkly affair!

Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary, Goa – If you walk through this trail, you will be able to see the glowing Mycena mushrooms that grow on dead logs or stumps. This mostly happens during the rainy season as it is the best time for these mushrooms to grow. This is truly a sight worth seeing once!

Purushwadi Forest, Maharashtra – When we talk about bioluminescence, how can we forget about fireflies? During pre-monsoon or summer, if you visit this forest you can see over 2000 species of fireflies. They even have a firefly festival in May each year!
