Teams ending unscathed with 1st innings lead on opening day

Taking a first innings lead on day 1 of a test match with both your openers intact is a rarity in test cricket. 160/0 NZ v Pak 104 Hamilton 2000/01 Pakistan created a few ripples by beating New Zealand by 299 runs in Auckland in their own backyard in the first match of the three match affair before the second match ended in a draw.

New Zealand replied with 407 on the back of centuries from openers Mark Richardson and Matthew Bell. Craig McMillan also contributed with 98 while Stephen Fleming made an unbeaten half-century.

Pakistan were bowled out for just 118 in their second innings and went on to lose the match by an innings and 185 runs. With Pakistan having been skittled out within just 26.5 overs, New Zealand openers Richardson and Bell overhauled the team's total on day 1 itself and finished the day will an unbeaten stand of 160.
